Journalists Safety & Security

Journalists in Khulna have called for stronger institutional support, a dedicated safety law, legal assistance and regular training to address the growing risks and challenges of the profession.

The demands came at a discussion titled “Dialogue, Cooperation and Action – Safety and Security of Journalists”, organized by MSN – Media Support Network on 5 September 2026. Journalists from different media outlets shared their experiences and discussed what they need to work safely and independently.

A major focus of the discussion was the need for a reliable support system for journalists. Mostofa Jamal of Maasranga TV proposed establishing a Central Information Cell where journalists could seek support for different professional needs. He also suggested forming a lawyers’ panel for immediate legal assistance and developing regular reading and learning opportunities, including reading materials and dedicated spaces for journalists.

He further called for training modules on Basic Journalism and Safety that could be used by media houses to provide regular training at the regional level.

Hasan Himalay of Daily Samakal stressed the urgent need to introduce and implement a Journalists Safety Act, alongside proper implementation of labour laws. He also emphasized the need to address the mental health and wellbeing of journalists.

The issue of political and institutional pressure was also strongly raised. Koushik Dey of Kaler Kantho said excessive political involvement can make journalists vulnerable to pressure from different sides. He called for journalism to be free from state and political pressure and stressed that job security is essential for journalists to work with an independent mind and dedication. He also supported the establishment of a platform such as a Media Commission to bring journalists together and strengthen their collective voice.

Tariqul Islam of Ekhon pointed to the long history of journalist killings since the 1990s and said satisfactory measures to prevent such incidents or ensure justice have yet to be taken. He also called for stronger action against undue influence on the media.

The need for unity among journalists was highlighted by Kakon of Khulna Protidin, who said journalists first need to build greater unity within the profession. She also called for a dedicated government office, agency or ministry that journalists could approach for assistance during crises.

Abu Tayeb of NTV called for action to stop the misuse of laws such as the DSA to harass journalists. He also stressed the importance of maintaining strong relationships with international media organizations and partners so that journalists can receive support when facing regional or national pressure. He urged authorities to implement the recommendations of the Media Reform Commission.

Several participants focused on practical safety and professional skills. Rubel of Somoy TV called for frequent training on field reporting, including how to approach people, how to behave in different situations and what background and safety checks journalists should complete before visiting a familiar or unfamiliar location. Atiar proposed a Divisional Quick Response Support system for journalists in emergencies, suggesting that AI and new technologies could be used to strengthen such support.

Other participants also raised concerns about journalists’ working conditions. Aysha of Khulna Gazette called for guarantees of fair salaries and professional dignity, while Hedayet stressed the importance of proper appointment letters and measures to ensure that journalists do not face additional pressure when detained or sent to prison. Hasan Molla emphasized the need for extensive training on Basic and Credible Journalism, highlighting the importance of strengthening core professional skills alongside safety measures.

Across the discussion, journalists emphasized that safety cannot depend only on individual caution. They called for institutional support, legal protection, professional training, job security and collective action to create a safer environment for journalism in Khulna and beyond.
